taboan CEBUS BEST buwad

Here's to one of the beautiful parts of Cebu's retail district.

Enjoying the beauty of Cebu is more than just going to the different beaches and land marks. As expressed in previous articles, experiencing Cebu should also be done by immersing at the downtown's local culture. Cheaper goods may be bought at Colon or at the Carbon Market but Tabo-an is another story.

Tabo-an is where you can find the widest array of buwad or dried fish, local delicacies and even hand-crafted household materials. Of you were to buy pasalubongs for your friends and relatives outside Cebu, Tabo-an is where you can find cheaper dried mangoes, otap, masareal, chicharon and dried seafood products. You can also find the best-tasting bibinka, biko and binignit here, too. For locals, Tabo-an is also the go-to market for fresh fish, meat products, fruits and vegetables. You can also buy cheaper sweets and delicacies from the Northern part of Cebu as well such as rosquillos and galletas de carmen since Tabo-an is one of the biggest distributors for locally-manufactured goods. Aside from the cheaper price, you can always haggle with the vendors for a lower selling price.

What's more, aside from household materials, this is where people source building materials and landscaping materials such as hoses, plants, fertilizers and flowerpots. There are also dealers for handcrafted baskets and souvenirs especially shell products.

Have you ever been to the cheese festival in Compostela, Cebu?

So how to get there? If you come from the downtown area, especially Colon, ride an Alumnos-bound jeepney and tell the driver to drop you off at Taboan. From the jeepney's drop-off point, you then have to ride a trisikad going to Tabo-an proper. Make sure to avoid wearing any fancy clothes and skip your jewelry as these can be inviting to both thieves and vendors who will charge higher than usual.

If you're a visitor, Tabo-an is definitely worth the visit! If you're a local, don't be a stranger to Cebu and try buying your goods here- you'll be surprised with the joy you'll feel once you discover your favorites at cheaper prices.
