The Simpsons Eerily Predicted The Future

Sixteen years ago, The Simpsons eerily predicted the rise of Donald Trump.

Not only that, the writers of the longest-running TV sitcom also predicted Farmville, autocorrect, three-eyed fishes, the Greek financial crisis and more!

The folks behind The Simpsons are basically fortune tellers!

Here are times the animated show bizarrely predicted the future.

Greece’s Financial Meltdown (2015) was predicted in 2013.

The financial crisis in Greece at present has rumbled on, hogging headlines for a few weeks now, but The Simpsons saw things going awry three years ago: just witness this small, subtle gag in a 2013 episode ‘Politically Inept, With Homer Simpson’. As Homer is being interviewed on TV, a news ticker flashes on the screen below with the headline: “Europe puts Greece on eBay.”

The Rolling Stones Concert Tours in the 2010s (predicted in 1995)

Apple Watch (2015) (predicted in 1995)

In the 1995 episode ‘Lisa’s Wedding’, set in the future, her fiance has a poster in her room claiming that The Rolling Stones will still be on tour in 2010 on “The Steel Wheelchair Tour.” The same episode, by the way, sees characters communicate via snazzy electronic watches. The same watches Apple made this year!

Three-Eyed Fish (discovered in 2011—predicted in 1990)

In a 1990 episode, Bart catches a mutated, three-eyed fish in the local river – a nod to the pollutant effects of the town’s nuclear power plant. Over 20 years later, in 2011, a real-life fish – and practically a dead-ringer for its cartoon counterpart – was discovered in an Argentinian reservoir located near a nuclear facility.

People stealing grease and cooking oil (2008) – predicted in 1998

One 1998 episode centered around Homer and Bart’s racket reselling cooking oil – a crime that seems silly to happen in real life, but an incident in 2008 did exactly that. Check out the new story here.

Magicians Siegfried and Roy mauled by a show tiger (2003) –predicted in 1993

In 1993, The Simpsons spoofed magicians Siegfried and Roy in a set-piece that saw them mauled by their co-star tiger, only for it to happen for real in 2003! Definitely the most tragic of the Simpsons’ gags-turned-prophecies.
