Jodie Whittaker will become the first woman to play Doctor Who and a few people aren’t happy about it.

Jodie Whittaker will become the first female and 13th overall Doctor on the long-running British sci-fi series, Doctor Who. Most people loved the announcement and are excited to see Whittaker take on the role of the Time Lord. However, a few people thinks that a female actress shouldn’t play the Doctor who has been represented by men actor since 1963.

BBC, the network that owns Doctor Who responded to the backlash in an official statement.

“Since the first Doctor regenerated back in 1966, the concept of the Doctor as a constantly evolving being has been central to the programme. The continual input of fresh ideas and new voices across the cast and the writing and production teams has been key to the longevity of the series.”

It continued, “The Doctor is an alien from the planet Gallifrey and it has been established in the show that Time Lords can switch gender”
