Carrie Fisher iconically played the character Princess Leia in the ‘Star Wars’ films. In 2016, Fisher passed away due to a cardiac arrest she suffered onboard a flight from London to Los Angeles. The late actress appeared as Princess Leia for the last time in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’, the eighth episode in the sci-fi saga released just a year after her death.

As her character’s fate was left ambiguous at the end of the movie, fans speculate that the producers would kill off the character by narrating her death in the opening crawl. However, some fans want another actress to continue the role and the fans chose the legendary Meryl Streep.

Fans are calling the producers of Disney and LucasFilm and director JJ Abrams to replace Fisher with Meryl Streep in ‘Star Wars’ Episode IX. The petition describes Streep as “an ideal candidate”, saying she “has always been known as the greatest actress alive.

The petition reads, “…Apart from her acclaimed acting performances, [Streep]’s close relationship with Carrie Fisher and her performance in ‘Postcards From The Edge’ (a movie based on Fisher’s semi-autobiographical novel) also made her an ideal candidate to play Leia in Star Wars Episode IX.

The petition has more than 9,000 supporters at the time of writing, while its goal is to reach 10,000.
