The Pinoy Pride boxing series just had its 10th edition last December 10 at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.
From accounts of the bout and from television footage, it drew a really huge crowd and the win via stoppage by Rey ‘Boom Boom’ Bautista had the house roaring.
The Pinoy Pride series is an offering of the ALA Promotions to the Philippine boxing community.
The first offering on October 2010 featured AJ ‘Bazooka’ Banal going up against Luiz alberto ‘El Demonador’ Perez at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel grand ballroom.
Since then, several other promotions followed including one in Bacolod and two in Lapu-Lapu City.
ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer and his team have indeed been able to tickly the fancy of the discerning Cebuano fight fans.
Having followed boxing since the early 1990s at the Cebu Coliseum, I have seen the ups and downs of the sport in this part of the world.
When boxing promoters brought the bouts to the hotel ballrooms, the gamble paid off as more fans came to watch in a venue deemed as not only convenient, but definitely more comfortable.
Bringing the bouts to the hotels allowed a wide range of fans from various economic levels to come together and enjoy a sport that is not only popular in the country, but worldwide.
With Filipino pugs fighting foreign opponents, the fans have also become more interested in going to the promotions to cheer for our countrymen.
While cheering for the homegrown talents is a given, it cannot also be denied that the boxing fans continue to be very discerning. The good fights get good reviews while the bad ones get bashed.
Cebuanos have always been tough customers not only for consumer products, but also for entertainment.
If there is one proven product that has stood that test of the Cebuano audience, it is the Pinoy Pride series.
Pinoy Pride has seen many boxers fall on their knees.
