The Sinulog celebration was not all about religion and culture as several sporting events were also held in Cebu during that time.
Among them was the Sinulog Cup Football Festival organized by the Cebu Amateur Football Club for the Cebu City Sports Commission.
Festival-type football tournaments feature smaller pitches and shorter games to make sure everything is over within a two-day or three-day period.
Last January 7 and 8, 215 teams from different age categories gathered at the University of San Carlos-Talamban Campus Field and the San Roque Parish Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City for the Sinulog Cup Football Festival.
The bad weather did not dampen the spirits of the participants and their supporters, who braved the muddy pitches to play in the event that was held for the second straight year.
Adding glitz to this year’s event was the presence of some stars from the United Football League, who came during the last day to meet the players.
The KTEC Trading team won the men’s division title of the two-day event.
Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu bagged titles in the Girls’ 17, Boys’ 14, and Players 8 categories.
Paref Springdale won the Boys’ 17 and Boys 12 categories.
Canduman-Dedon topped the Players 6 class while San Roque Football Club won the Girls 14 title and Danao FC the Palyers 10 crown.
Many of the games were decided via a penalty shootout.
The organizing CAFC is also the same group that puts together the annual Inter-Club Football Tournament held during the school break later this year.
This is an 11-a-side event that is participated in by teams from different parts of the country.
