Facebook has recently removed rape joke pages from its site saying that there is no place on Facebook for hateful, threatening, or violent contents (Twitter is the place for such).
Such pages have come under scrutiny by victim support groups saying that site such as "You know she's playing hard to get when you're chasing her down an alleyway" (surely beats "You Know You're Cebuano if...") which had been taken down after breaking the Terms and Conditions policy. However, such postings remain if a tag is added stating they are just for humor or satirical purposes. This was bound to happen eventually in a time where people spend more time online thru social networking sites feeding off loads of uncontrolled information at everyones fingertips. From simple group gatherings to inciting a rebellion for change, Facebook is now a tool that serves the purposes of free minded collectives who see cyberspace as the last frontier in getting their sentiments across without censorship. Most find Twitter as a good way of getting the message across but with limited input it has its shortcomings where Facebook capitalizes with its rich and viral content. This latest action of Facebook may be a prelude to its ambition of entering China (vehemently denied by Facebook) who has greatly restricted the free flow of information over the internet resulting in its netizens creating their own micro-blogging sites and developing their own language to avoid censorship as well as persecution by the government. Nevertheless, things from our own side of the globe seem to be more preoccupied with cheesy notes on Facebook rather than inciting hate or racist remarks which is a good thing considering how low things have been going for most of the country now. That is one thing I find amazing, we tend to use social networking sites to cheer ourselves up (minus the 0.00001% who obviously have a screw loose) or responsibly use it for the purpose it was meant for.
