We’re back with that #FlashbackFriday when you feel the rush of the music you grew up with, the avant-garde way on Y101.

There’s only one station that will bring you back in time to remind you why you’re what you are today. Y101 Always First rewinds you to that intoxicating flashback on Friday Gold Rush which everyone pines for, but before I give you today’s editorial, let me start by telling you what we do on the Rush – it’s crudely anything and everything gold from 5 years ago and back!

As I was tidying up some of our posters the other day, I came across an interesting #fbf, so instinctively I already knew what I had to with this interesting find! I simply had to write about it so here’s how the story goes…

Back in 2008, Y101 was the only Cebu station that sponsored Duran Duran’s concert in Araneta Coliseum, Manila and what a rocking concert it was! Not to say that this band was purely rock because on the contrary, I feel that frontman Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Roger Taylor were actually more pop rock although they are officially known as a new wave/synthpop group.

To prompt you with some of their most popular tracks of which you’ve all probably heard on Fridays at Y101 but require some aides-mémoires for their titles – here are some cues for your memory banks: Hungry Like A Wolf, Rio, The Reflex, Save A Prayer, Wild Boys, Notorious, Union Of The Snake, Is There Something I Should Know?, Planet Earth, Girls On Film just to name a few…

Duran Duran was one of the more successful bands of the 80s known for having released numerous singles always placing within the top 10 in the UK Singles Chart and dominating the Billboard Hot 100. The multi-award winning British icons also were branded as having pioneered the new wave explosion and were wallpapers of MTV!

And ushered by MTV Philippines, the band flaunted their reputation as idols when they paralyzed Imperial Manila on April 10 of 2008 with their Manila pit-stop of their memorable world tour Red Carpet Massacre. Opening the concert was the local band Sandwich who performed a couple of numbers from their latest creations as well.

Duran Duran kicked off their gig with Hungry Like A Wolf and more of their best sellers but continued on to promote their album with new tracks which ironically were never released except for the song Falling Down which was done in collabo with Justin Timberlake. They ended the concert on an encore with their 1982 anthem Rio.

This album finished the Duran Duran era as it sold poorly and received negative reviews and although they contributed with other artists, in our hearts we all know that the Duran Duran of the 80s is over. Though never over here at Y101, as they live on forever on our Friday Gold Rush!

Be with us every Friday for #fbf on Y101 Always First and experience that time of your life from 8 AM – 6 PM and always be reminded of how today’s music came to be on our special – Friday Gold Rush!
