Many revel in the Sinulog celebrations, however most of us have not yet known of the official flower for our yearly celebration in honor of Sto. Niño. So after more than a decade the official flower for the Sinulog celebration was unveiled to the public.
But unknown to many, Franklin Seno, consultant of the Hillyland Management Board, said the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) had already declared the “Celosia” as the official Sinulog flower in 2000 yet. However, the flower has not been officially launched to the public because the Hillyland Management Board became stagnant for years. In the activity in Barangay Sirao, the "Celosia" flower was also named by the City as the “Halad sa Sto. Niño” flower as it features the prominent colors of the garment of the Sto Niño which are yellow and red. SFI executive director Ricky Ballesteros, who attended the launching, said they will be using the celosia flower to adorn the stage for the Sinulog 2012 grand parade.
For those who want to know more about the "Celosia" it comes from the Greek word meaning "Flaming love" attributed to the flame-like head of the flower. The flowers shape is much alike a rooster's comb and has silky blooms that make it very attractive. Arnel Opte, one of the growers, said the celosia can last up to two weeks after cutting and if placed in pots the flowers can last up to three months. While the "celosia" flowers are grown in the mountain barangay of the city, Opte said they are not usually seen being sold locally in the city because it is quite expensive compared to other flowers. A bundle of celosia flower can cost up to P20.00 and the ones they grow are directly delivered to Central Luzon.
