The Notebook... (The Emotional Side of Things)PDFPrintE-mail

This article I've come up today is partly or completely inspired by a movie by the same title which came out way back in 2004.

Set in the 1940's down south, it revolves around two individuals who were worlds apart in terms of social standing (It's the usual love story we read and hear about) but probably what sets this particular story apart is the twists to the usual plot. The main characters are separated, go their separate ways and thanks to the girls mother who hid the letters from the guy (365+1 farewell letters to be precise) meet up once again after 7 years. The girl is set to marry a rich guy from the south while the other guy had been doing pretty well himself after WWII. They both finish the "deed" that was cut off 7 years earlier. Girl's mom has grown a conscience and returns all the letters the guy wrote every day for a year (365) + 1 farewell letter. They eventually end up together which was vague and did not have a part where they were married plus the whole nine yards. Interestingly, the whole story is told by a man to a woman with dementia at a nursing home.  As the movie unfolds it is revealed that the old man and woman were the actual lovers in the story but unfortunately the woman had developed dementia, which had caused her to forget about the past. She had written all her memories on a notebook and the guy would read to her the story hoping that she'd remember them, which she does for a few minutes before relapsing yet again. In the end they both die together in each other’s arms a testament to their undying love. At first I thought the movie was another cheesy chick flick that I'd have to barf halfway thru the movie but it got me thinking that if two people are that committed to each other bound by love then anything and everything is possible. Bring that story into today’s modern society then it would just be another weekend romance or fling which is just like throwing a disposable cup, life before was a lot different when things were less complicated and more sensible. If I were asked to make a choice I'd probably go with living in the past where the air was cleaner, grass was greener, and life was more simple. We'd have to admit that life now is made simpler by modern technology or we are led to think it is, we cannot remove the fact that it is way more complicated even with machines to help us. As we get more wired we venture farther and farther away from what we really want and matters.
