I know that the title is way too overrated but it is one way of practically putting it with the goal of possibly reaching out to those who are directly concerned.
A few days back we had a real downpour of rain over the weekend starting of late Friday afternoon that lasted all night long and the result was water on the streets up to our knees and waist in some areas who before had never had such a problem. One thing that caught my attention is the area from Gaisano Country Mall heading to Paradise Village where the waters were high enough to stall automobiles and motorists as well as massive amounts of water coming down from the mountains flooding subdivisions near my place which was not the case a few months back. What had gone wrong now when before even 3 to 4 days of non stop rain would not cause the water to rise that much. We fare better than our counterparts in Manila because Cebu is not below the waterline, we also have more trees rather than a concrete jungle of tall buildings. Unfortunately, I don't even know the answer to how it happened but it did and now under this freakish weather we are experiencing more low pressure areas or ITZ's heading to the end of the year. One things for sure, garbage is a major cause of floods but what haven't we implemented new steps in garbage collection by segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable for almost a quarter already? The sad thing about floods is that after a few heavy downpours plus flooding it's the streets that bear the brunt, we see roads developing holes even on recently asphalted ones that cause more problems in the long run. This article was not written to point fingers or hit people but it is a way of expressing ones opinion and the question of why this is happening, if a solution is found to avoid this in the future then those who took the initiative to solve it deserve to called true leaders or the unsung heroes of the community whichever may apply. To those who idly sit on their butts doing nothing who go by the habit of not lifting a finger as long as it does not affect them directly can roll over and stay dead for real. This is Cebu, we are in a better place to correct things as they happen while they happen because we are not yet that highly urbanized compared to Manila where change is hard to enact without creating a sandstorm of discontent. Hoping that the incident last weekend would be avoided in the future as we strive to preserve what little piece of heaven we have here.
