As we draw nearer to All Souls and All Saints Day, we again remember our dearly departed loved ones as well as take the time off work and unwind.
Though as Filipinos we have a deep rooted tradition of honoring the dead for the time they had spent with us we have also infused some culture from other countries such as what people from the US and Europe, this would be celebrating Halloween which originally called "Hallow's Eve" going back to the early Roman feast of Pomona and Parentalia as well as Celtic festival of Samhain. I remember back when I was young gathering in the family room telling ghost stories and at time getting the eerie feeling of some unworldly presence around the living as well as watching some horror or ghost movies which is synonymous to watching A Christmas Carol (Christmas) and The Ten Commandments (Holy Week). But this year there is no good movie showing in the cinemas to set the mood, unless if you are a patron of local horror movies then you're in luck! We truly have moved to a time when we have grown out of our comfort zones. Not to long ago people tend to be more appropriate when visiting the cemetery unlike now where people tend to take advantage of the solemnity by treating cemeteries as places where they can hang out, gamble, eat, and play loud music. This may not be a common sight in more affluent cemeteries (privately owned) but a few minutes drive to the rural areas then you get to see what I mean. Probably it's a way people shake off the dreary dragging time which should be observed in prayer or silence. There is always a way to unwind, there are Halloween parties happening in almost every disco or bar to liven things which is the proper venue compared to the cemetery. What I might be driving at is let us put the things in their proper place since we are bound to rest at a certain moment in time and definitely would hate someone playing loud music, laughing, dancing, and using our tombs as tables right?
