Growing up in New York City was such a mindboggling experience. I was only 13 years young and 100 pounds lighter way back then. I met some homeboys in my hood on my first week in the city that never sleeps. Their agenda was to take me on a Greenwich Village tour. Sure enough, next thing I knew we were on our way to Electric Lady Land Studios. Excitement’s grip was on me every step of the way as I looked around with curiosity and bewilderment. What a scene!
There were Puerto Ricans drinking beer on a brownstone listening to salsa as their fine-figured women danced with reckless abandon. I was attracted to every grind they graciously produced. A black dude with a big-ass boom box passed by as rap music rudely interrupted our thoughts.
A Jamaican was smoking something that couldn’t have been legal according to its size of his rolled cigar. Punk rockers with Christmas-lights-colored hairdos crawled by like freaks. A heroin addict was selling his pants and belt. Guitar players with their cases open for donation. Musicians, comedians, and magicians strut their stuff. It was organized chaos people being people enjoying freedom to the max and finally Electric Lady Land...
This where Jimi Hendrix got creative and conquered the world his guitar. We sat outside the studio but couldn’t go in. There was one big sign that said: "By appointment only. 0 per hour." I touched its doorstep with amazement thinking about all the rock stars that stepped on them.
For me it was like going to church minus the priest. Of course, pictures were taken and sent back home. Well, the Greenwich Village. What a place! Don’t miss it if you happen to be around New York. Maybe that Jamaican dude is still there!
