Melting Crime DownPDFPrintE-mail

How do you reduce the number of violent crimes and the rampant gun trafficking? Quite simple, just follow how things are done in Jamaica... melt down illegal / unlicensed firearms. Jamaica has melted down about 2,000 illegal firearms just a few days ago in a drive to rid themselves of loose firearms, which gave rise to violent crimes. The pistols and revolvers were thrown into a furnace in the capital Kingston, watched by police and officials from the government and the UN. Jamaica has one of the highest rates of gun crime in the world.
Correspondents say criminal gangs are often as well armed as the security forces. Officials said about half a ton of ammunition would also be destroyed in the operation. Most of the guns had been seized in police operations. However, old firearms from police, military and prison personnel were also destroyed to ensure they did not end up in the hands of criminals.

If only we can see such initiative done here as well then perhaps our streets would be much safer. We are used to seeing massive stockpiles of weapons paraded on television from so-called raids but we never see the next phase after the publicity stunt. We are left guessing if the said weapons are resold or simply kept in storage till they rust. If it can’t be given to local law enforcement (I don’t see why not) considering the most police officers end up dead or at a disadvantage when responding to emergencies simply because their pistol from WWII cannot compete against the newer more high powered ones crooks use then perhaps it should be destroyed (completely) and not just the usual dismantling process simply because any part that can still be used will be reused as spare parts for existing firearms. If we cannot pass a law on gun control then perhaps melting down confiscated firearms is the best possible resolution to lower crimes committed.

There will never be a "gunless" society, it is merely wishful thinking of pacifists who are still longing for the past when things were more simple. Effective laws that benefits all not a few is the best way to address the situation.
