We all think that the sport of boxing is a game / sport for mature and intelligent minded individuals but that was not the case during the bout between our very own Filipino boxer Johreil Casimero who knocked out Argentinian Luis Lazarte at Mar del Plata, Argentina when a clean and honest fight ended up in a riot that endangered the lives of Casimero and his group.
After Casimero was assured the IBF Junior Flyweight Championship by defeating Lazarte things took an ugly turn when before he was declared the official winner a riot had started. Empty bottles as well as chairs rained down on the ring as well as even Lazarte's camp had thrown punches at Casimero before security and police officers rushed to the stage (always late then on time) to break up the ruckus but the damage had been done. Luckily, our team escaped with a few bruises and nothing serious but it goes to show that if we (Filipinos) are sometimes called rowdy we at least know how to control ourselves in a very civilized manner. Checking on the background of Casimero's opponent one would be shocked at his tarnished record for being a dirty fighter shown by the number of fouls including low blows, rabbit punches, as well as Lazarte biting Casimero. The audacity of this boxer did not even spare Referee Eddie Claudio whom he threatened by asking if he (referee) wanted to make it out alive.
Casimero and his entourage are now safely back home and the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) in the Philippines is planning to ask their Argentinian counterparts to conduct an investigation of the post-fight riot which from an educated guess will be wiped under the table. We all extend our congratulations to Casimero for his professionalism despite of what had happened, he maintained his cool and composure by respecting the host country. But we hope that what happened would serve as a warning to future event organizers that regardless of who wins order should be maintained and that dirty fighters should never be allowed to enter the ring.
