This usually is not my forte, talking about the End of Days or the Apocalypse but it does give us a very uncomfortable nudge once in a while. The past week has been dominated by talk about Judgment Day happening on May 21, 2011 as predicted by a U.S. evangelist who had previously foretold the end of the world way back during the ‘90s which likewise did not happen.
Unfortunately, after much hype and media coverage on TV and print the end has again not manifested itself. The evangelist even predicted that the end would start at 6 o'clock in the evening in different parts of the world considering the time zones for each continent which shows that it is just a bunch of bull crap. If the end were to really happen it would not have the decency to hit in time zones but rather instantaneously across the world.
So now that the 21st of May 2011 is officially behind us, what then? The next question is who would be the next cuckoo-brained person or group to proclaim another prediction of the End of Days? One thing is for sure, no one can accurately predict when the end of the world would happen. Science cannot even predict earthquakes and where they would exactly hit, so how can someone with no scientific background claim to know when the world would end?
But we are curious creatures. Strong quakes hit New Zealand, Japan, and recently Spain. We usually associate such events with some higher purpose or plan that is connected to our different religious faiths. What is ironic is most people tend to "repent" or "change" only when talk of impending doom is on the horizon. The quick way to salvation is the common ploy we use to improve our chances of living the dream in the afterlife or the other side of this mortal world we dwell in.
I remember back in school when our Religious Education teacher said that freedom is a gift we were given and in freedom we have the choice to do good or evil. We live in a world where freedom is abused and twisted to serve individual purposes. Bottom line is we are free to choose to do good or evil but being imperfect we tend to think that a quick switch from evil to good erases the previous errors we have committed thus bringing the promise of salvation.
I honestly don't want to dive into a debate about religion but overall it is better to be mindful of the things we do every day so we won’t have to panic when someone cries "wolf" again. That U.S. evangelist has struck out twice and he better not try a third time or risk being burned at the stake like in the olden days. If the end comes then it comes, either by means of natural disasters which can be explained by science of by some higher authority which science cannot explain. For now let us lead our lives, do good all around and not just for ourselves.
