It's the NBA Finals once again and it has been a season full of surprises. We witnessed how well-known teams such as the LA Lakers, Boston Celtics, and San Antonio Spurs simply got demolished by newer and much younger teams, giving the season a much-needed fresher look.
It has been a monopoly of the top teams the past few years; teams that have each won more than one championship each. Now, in seven games or less we will know who fares better – the Dallas Mavericks who possess experience and a huge hunger for a championship or the Miami Heat who have the Big 3 of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh who after a shaky start this season made it to the Finals.
Personally, I am rooting for the Mavericks not because of their classy lineup but for the sheer determination and teamwork they have been showing this season as well as in previous seasons. Hard work as well as perseverance do indeed pay off. On the other hand, I am a big fan of LBJ but I feel that with the current composition of the Heat they still lack that cohesion that makes them a team to reckon with.
During the regular season as well as the playoffs we heard of one name mentioned as the sole person responsible for giving Miami the win. Seldom did we hear of team effort making their win possible. That’s not to mention the locker-room gossips about the infighting between the Heat’s Big 3. The bottom line is they still lack the teamwork that made the Chicago Bulls champions six times years back.
Basketball has a huge following more than ever and even if the Finals have not yet officially started, avid fans are already giving their two cents’ worth of who and why their team should win based on statistics or based on personal preference, which brings back memories of those who collected basketball trading cards with players statistics trying to beat each other with stats and fast forward to today where one can live the fantasy by playing NBA Live which keeps coming up with newer versions to compliment new players and teams.
I enjoy watching a good game of basketball on TV minus the other distractions, just the game and the game only. So this coming week I'll be glued to the tube rooting for my favorite team hoping they'd make it but as the saying goes: "The ball is round.” Anything can happen.
