WE ARE IN

U2 for a Change Print

{mosimage}

Fame is a ridiculous waste of time. And celebrity culture? Disgusting (but not entirely, of course).

Unfortunate as it is – scandals and controversies hound artists far worse than the paparazzi scramble for embarassingly stolen shots. Little wonder that we hear of this and that artist’s conviction in a case made against an agressive member of that coven; this celebrity seen in a video scandal of some sort, etc…

Sadly, all these patch into an unsavory image of the music industry – but that doesn’t mean that everything that wallows in mud remains eternally soiled, don’t you think?

So where does U2 fall in the “cleanliness” meter? Here in Y101 Always First, we’ll give you a peek at how the legendary band fares.

While generations X, Y and Z brand U2 as highly-strung “electronica-cum-pop rock-wannabes,” every critic can’t deny the fact that this band of Irish origins have summed up a largely successful career that has earned them a space in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, more than a dozen Grammy Awards and almost 140 million albums sold worldwide – more than any artist of these generation.

But what really makes these rock and roll immortals a crater deep in contemporary rock history is not their musicianship per se but their social integration that has been widely documented in the past years.

Greenpeace, DATA (Debt AIDS Trade Africa), ONE and Amnesty International are just among the cause-related organizations that Bono (vocalist) and U2 have been promoting in the past years – and the band’s involvement indeed have brought blessings not only to the marginalized in society but to chosen impoverished communities as well.

This gesture of a prominent band extending and integrating among the ones with no voice has by far impressed the Y101 Web Team and it’s one of the reasons why countless fans follow U2’s activities through the years.

“The music of U2 has always been about heart and mind, body and soul. Down the years the band has successfully thrown a spotlight on the work of key campaigning groups who are trying to make the world a better place.” – U2.com.

The Rhythm Crew couldn’t agree more. Despite U2’s famed musical compositions and multi-decorated career, U2 has stepped up on an artistic plane where artistry isn’t only for “art’s sake.”

Savor U2's anthem of love, peace and change in Y101's Friday Gold Rush where rock legends are exalted in a cob-webbed altar. We kid, of course.

And if you don’t mind, we leave you this quote to ponder on:

”We must become the change we want to see in the world.” -Mahatma Gandhi.
