Chris Brown accused of 'blaming' Rihanna for assaultImage Source: billboard.com

Chris Brown has recently been criticized for comments he made in the new documentary Chris Brown: Welcome To My Life where he opened up about the 2009 incident that saw him physically abuse then-girlfriend Rihanna.

In the documentary, Chris Brown was caught explaining what happened in 2009. He said, “She starts going off, she throws the phone, ‘I hate you!’, whatever, whatever, she starts hitting me, we’re in a little Lamborghini, you know she’s fighting me. Like I remember she tried to kick me, just like her beating shit, but then I really hit her. With a closed fist, like I punched her, and it busted her lip, and when I saw it I was in shock, I was ‘fuck, why did I hit her like that?'”

He continued: “So from there she’s…spitting blood in my face, it raised me even more. It’s a real fight in the car, and we driving in the street. She grabbed my nuts. And when she did that, I bite her arm while I’m still trying to drive.”

At least two domestic abuse charities think that Chris Brown sounds like he’s blaming Rihanna for what happened. Sandra Horley of Refuge said that: “Whatever goes wrong in a relationship, no man has a right to hit his partner. We all say and do things we later regret, but domestic violence does not ‘take two’.”

Horley added: “No woman can make a man hit her; violence is a choice he makes and he alone is responsible for it. Blaming the victim is another way perpetrators maintain control over their victims.”

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, you can seek out the help from your local Barangay or police station. Cebu has a legal system that enforces the law against domestic violence at home.
