One of the recent heroes to take the name Ms Marvel in the comics is Kamala Khan. The character, first introduced in 2013 in “Captain Marvel #14”, is Marvel Comics’ first ever Muslim hero. Khan’s family is from Pakistan and her powers include the ability to change shape.

This version of Ms Marvel was created by G Willow Wilson and Ian Herring who told The Times back in 2013, “It was really important.. to portray Kamala as someone who is struggling with her faith. It’s about the universal experience of all American teenagers, feeling kind of isolated and finding what they are through the lens of being a Muslim-American.

Kamala Khan also faces struggles in the family as her mother often gets paranoid that she may get pregnant if she gets too close to a boy and her father puts pressure on her to study and become a doctor.

Kevin Feige, the president for Marvel responsible for the Marvel movies confirmed plans to bring Kamala Khan into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking to the BBC, he said, “Ms Marvel … the Muslim hero who is inspired by Captain Marvel, is definitely sort of in the works.”
