It has become a hot topic for the past few weeks. It has grabbed headlines here and abroad.

Mainstream media has it covered and everybody is talking about it on social media as well. “Laglag Bala” is all over the news and on everyone’s Facebook feed. If I didn’t know any better, I would think that this was happening everyday. This has caused a lot of anger, fear and embarrassment for most Filipinos. Concerns were raised on how this could affect the image of our country by different sectors both private and government.

“Laglag bala” is a modus operandi where departing passengers at the airport are held because ammunition is found in their possession. Under the law, possession of unauthorized live ammunition or firearms merits sanctions. The intent of those carrying the items is not a factor. Incidents of passengers not knowing where those bullets came from and how it got into their possession are mind-boggling. Well, not really. It is obvious that it is planted there to create fear and hassle, so these passengers would rather settle than being delayed and face a criminal offence. It is also clear that there is a syndicate behind this operation. There have been more than 6,000 cases of ammunition intercepted at airports all over the country since 2012. Close to 1,400 cases of ammunition inside passengers’ bags have been recorded all over the country in 2015 so far, with the bulk of those interceptions happening at the NAIA Terminal 3.

OFW and tourists are the usual victims. The image of our country is at risk. The greed and selfish people behind this should be held accountable. An investigation should commence immediately; extortion or any act similar must not be tolerated specially in government facilities like the airport. Yes, it is the responsibility of the passenger not to carry any contraband items in our airports and plane, but it is also the responsibility of the government to protect the passenger from such criminal elements within their ranks. In another perspective, let us continue to be vigilant at all times. Social media can be a tool for others to use to manipulate the people's opinions. The “Laglag bala” can be used to diffuse issues and other matters.
