Summer is here again, and everyone seems to be enjoying the high temperature and the many activities that summer has to offer.

It is a time when people flock to the beach to cool down from the summer heat. It is also a good time to take trips and discover, and appreciate the wonders of nature. There are so many places out there that most of us haven’t even explored. We are too busy with our daily lives that we forget to take time to appreciate mother earth. It is ironic how we neglect her when our source of life comes from her. We forget this, because we think that commerce and businesses is our source of life, which is absolutely not true.

While we are all enjoying summer and the splendor it brings, I would like to look forward to the rainy season, when the monsoon rain comes around again. I have noticed that in our City of Cebu alone, the floods are getting worse each year. The poor planning of the cities drainage system, the building of structures on natural water basins and waterways, and the poor waste management are just among a few reasons for the rising flood problems we are having. There is a drastic change in our weather system, because of the damage of global warming, has a lot to contribute to this in a larger scale.

Most of the flood causes I have mentioned are man made in the guise of development and growth. When will we ever realize that development and growth are not all about man-made structures and advances? It is also about preserving the very basic natural flow of mother earth. Let us understand that our life here on earth depends on her, and not the skyscrapers we build. It is a sad fact that each time it floods, we blame the government and challenge the people in government to fix this problem. Yes, they all have responsibilities in drafting laws for the preservation of nature, and enforcing them strictly without bias to businessmen and multinational corporations, but we, as a people, are responsible too. If we begin to do our share in preserving mother earth on a daily basis, all the rest will follow.

The preservation of nature is a serious matter. This is about our lives and the life of our children. If there is anything worth fighting for in this world, I think this should top the list before political views and religion. After all, mother earth is the only home we have.
