After much celebration, controversy, noise and fears, Rio 2016 Olympics are poised to finally come to life with the opening ceremony happening tonight in Brazil. (7am tomorrow for us here in the Orient)

What time does the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony start?

The Olympic Games curtain-raiser begins at 8PM local time on Friday August 5 in Rio de Janeiro. That means the celebration over in Brazil will begin at 7am Saturday August 6 here in the Philippines.

Where does the ceremony take place?

The ceremony will be held at the famous Maracanã, officially the Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho. The stadium will stage the opening and closing ceremonies and the decisive matches of the men's and women's football tournaments (both finals and one semi-final in each). The iconic venue was modernised for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and can hold 74,738 spectators.

Where can I watch the show?

As the official broadcaster of the Rio Olympics 2016, TV5 is set to bring an extensive coverage and updates of the Olympics, but www.Rio2016.com will be covering the event live on its live blog from 2pm local time on Friday.

Who is directing the ceremony?

The ceremony of the last Summer Olympics held in London was directed by Danny Boyle (director of Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, and 28 Days Later). This season’s Summer Olympics in Rio is directed by Brazilian film director FernandoMeirelles and producer DanielaThomas. The two have created an opening ceremony with a budget which is a tenth of Danny Boyle's London 2012 opening ceremony. Meirelles, who directed the wildly successful and critically world acclaimed Brazilian movie City of God, said: "I'm very glad we're not spending money like crazy. I'm happy to work with this low budget because it makes sense for Brazil."

How long does the opening ceremony last?

It will show for over four hours. There will be dancing, samba, lights, fireworks, some history, some celebrities, and after all those, the Parade of Nations begins, starting with Greece then, in (Portuguese) alphabetical order, all the other countries.
