Juventus officially signed Napoli striker Gonzalo Gerardo Higuain on Tuesday with what is considered to be the most expensive transfer in Italian football history.

Higuain signed a five-year deal with the club with a release clause of €90 million. This is the third largest transfer fee overall in history, following Real Madrid’s acquisitions of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 28 year old broke the 66 year old Serie A goal scoring record of Gunnar Nordahl when he scored a hat trick on the final day of last season, giving him 36 goals in 35 matches.

Beppe Marotta, Juventus director, confirmed the completed registration of Higuain in person, while Napoli also confirmed the activated release clause in the contract.

Higuain, who was a former River Plate and Real Madrid striker, scored a total of 71 goals for Napoli after joining the club in 2013. The Argentina forward helped the club in its success in the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana in 2014.

Higuain hopes to bring Juventus to a sixth successive Serie A title this season.
