y101-talks-dyterte-roxas-debate

Last week the Filipino public witnessed the exchange of words between presidential aspirants Rodrigo Duterte and Mar Roxas, which quickly escalated from a slapping challenge to threats of a fist fight and a full-on gun duel.

This is in spite that the Philippines is stilled a civilized nation with law and order. Duterte started everything when said he wanted to slap Roxas. This was when he was speaking to a group of business people who invited him. “Pag magkita kami sa isang kanto dito sa kampanya, sampalin ko yang gagong yan (If I see him during the campaign, I’ll slap that idiot).” Duterte’s audience applauded on their candidate’s deliberate attempt to score a point against his opponent. To my surprise Mar Roxas responded by saying that not only would he slap Duterte, they should engage in a fist fight instead. Of course, Duterte took it further and invited Roxas to a gun duel.

While this is happening in the country the rest of the world were in Paris discussing the solution to global warming. It is an issue that the Philippines should seriously focus on since we are on the receiving end of its effects. We need to make the world understand that global warming effects are a serious threat to us and that being a third world country we have no capacity to address its impact on our people. This is just one of the many issues that our politicians should be focused on. We as a people should also understand that we have a responsibility to demand which issues our politicians should tackle. Priorities should be in order and it has to come from us.

By wasting our time making a big deal out of politicians slapping, punching, and shooting each other should not be the Filipinos priority. By applauding and cheering these actions only encourages our politicians to act like immature children and forget their main focus. We are just as immature as they are if we give time to notice the monkeys in this circus called Philippine politics. If we want to progress as a country we should start with ourselves. Let us demand the right politics worthy of our intellect so we get the results worthy of our great nation. To our politicians let it be known that the Philippines is a politically mature nation, we have no time for immaturity, If you want to be elected listen to our problems and bring your solutions.
